Root canal procedures are often required when decay has extended to the nerve of the tooth or when the tooth is causing pain that can't be alleviated any other way. A root canal involves removing the nerve of the tooth and filling it with a substance called gutta percha.

A root canal may also be recommended as a measure to save a tooth if extensive structure is missing.
